Bewitched, Bothered, & Bewildered A Guide to Spring 2004 Fashion Choices
It is rare that I meet someone who is devoted to using a toner after washing her face. It is more usual for someone to look at me like I have four heads and ask me why they should. It's a valid question, and one that justifies a thorough answer.
First of all, let me say that someone with oily skin is more apt to use one usually with the purpose of drying out the skin to avoid breakouts. They just love that tingly feeling! Depending on the ingredients, this can actually create more problems than not, but that's another story.
Gone (mostly!) are the days of heavy alcohol laden toners that dry up every ounce of oil on your face. Your skin type and condition will determine the type of toner you need.
What are the three main virtues of a toner?
- It acts as a final rinse for your skin. Removing any left over makeup your cleanser missed and any cleanser your rinsing missed.
- It lowers the pH of your skin and helps reestablish the protective acid mantle that is disturbed during regular cleansing. This is very important to the health of your skin.
- Depending on the type you choose, it has a very specific purpose everything from disinfecting to tightening enlarged pores to reducing redness to hydrating yup, hydrating!
So, now you know. The much neglected toner really does have a use! And, it's a good one.
