Fine-Tune Your Professional Makeup
Most women wear at least a little makeup everyday and see it as part of their professional wardrobe. While this may be true, many women still approach makeup application with great trepidation. The fear of looking inappropriate, silly, or obvious is worrisome.
Do you have a love-hate relationship with makeup? Is the idea of the natural look appealing and yet the results less than satisfying? Are you captivated by ads promising a youthful glow, sparkly eyes, or fuller lips? Do you have a drawer full of makeup you've tried and abandoned? Good makeup application is dependent upon the techniques, colors, and tools you use to accomplish the task. The goal is to notice you not your makeup.
Here are a few tips to consider:
- Focus on your two most important features. Drum roll please… your lips and eyebrows. They can bring focus to your eyes, which, after all, is the feature we really want people to notice.
Keep your eyebrows neatly groomed (tweezed and trimmed) and if necessary, add a little brow powder (powder is generally easier to apply and more forgiving than a brow pencil). Use a brush to blend, and you're done. A well-manicured brow will frame your eyes.
As we age our lips get thinner and paler. For beautiful lips, keep them moisturized, don't smoke, and add a little color. One that is slightly deeper than your own lip color often works well. If you have blue eyes, a hint of peach will make the color pop. Something a little pinker (perhaps brownish pink) will make green eyes sparkle. Brown eyes often respond best to a richer color.
- Wear mascara on your top lashes only. This is particularly useful advice if you have dark under eye circles or lines under your eyes. Think of your lower lashes as dark arrows pointing to under eye concerns. By focusing the mascara on the top lashes, you direct the focus up, drawing attention away from dark circles. (You can still wear a soft eyeliner under your eye. Keep it subtle and close to your lower lashes.)
- Powder is your friend. While too much powder can create a dry, lackluster look, powder applied strategically enhances your look. Always apply a light application of translucent powder over concealer. To set your foundation, use a mineral powder to hold the foundation in place without looking dry.
- Take good care of your skin. If you apply makeup to dry, flaky, bumpy skin, you'll get dry, flaky, bumpy looking makeup. If you do nothing else, establish a healthy skin care routine. Always wash your face before bed, use a skin hydrator, lightly exfoliate regularly, and wear a moisturizer with SPF daily all year long! (Those UVA rays come through car windows in January just as easily as July.)
A quick, no-nonsense approach to makeup is achievable. Simply choose colors that flatter your skin and eyes, refine your techniques to suit your needs, and be sure you have the proper tools (good brushes can make all the difference). It will boost your confidence and enhance your professional presentation.
