New Year 2002 Fashion Secret
In Support of Self-Expression
There is no denying that loss has been the pervasive theme over the past yearloss of lives, loss of jobs, and loss of our normal sense of security head the list. September 11th, a suffering economy, warm weather in the northeast, and a regurgitation of 70's fashions... all have had a major negative impact on the retail communitysales are way down. And, within a few short weeks, stores will begin receiving shipments of spring merchandise, and, trust me, they have no place to put
it. The result?
Some small stores are struggling, while others have already gone out of business. The long-term impact is disturbing. Imagine wanting to purchase something to wear that makes you feel great but the only shops left are the large department stores, many of which have a tendency to carry the same boring, cookie-cutter outfits. Creativity, self-expression, and ultimately, our psyche would suffer? At a very basic level, it impacts our spirit.
I am honestly not trying to be melodramatic. I feel very strongly about this. My passion is helping people express themselves through their image. To do that, we rely on the smaller stores to offer interesting choices and cater to a variety of tastes and styles. If they go out of business, everyone loses. It's that simple.
The good news is that there is something you can do to create a win-win situation:
Patronize Smaller Stores: It doesn't mean you have to spend a lot. Just think of them the next time you need or want to shopwhether for an entire outfit or simply a sweater, scarf, or accessory. Not only will you be protecting your creative self-expression, but you'll feel like you're doing a good deed at the same time.
To help get you started, if you don't already have a favorite small store, we have compiled a list of resources in the Boston area.
We also invite those of you outside the Boston area to let us know about a favorite shop(s) where you live. Over the next couple of weeks, we will compile a list and share it with you. Please include as much information as possible including, why you like it, and a website or email address if they have one. Together we can make a difference!
Best wishes for a happy, happy new year to you all.
