FACE FACTS Choosing the Right Make-up Look for You this Fall
I breathed a sigh of relief when I saw the trends for make-up this Fall. What we saw this past spring where the make-up and fashion world denied the fact that women over 25 existed must have been an aberration. Thankfully, sanity and reality have been restored! The Fall season offers something beautiful for everyone. You can revel in luxury, beauty and color, and although you may not be a millionnaire, it's easy to look like one! Let's see how:
Color
Red and gold lead the way! Choose the best red for you and your lips will shine and your eyes will glow (yes, the right lipstick has that effect). Now is the time to expand your definition of red. What's your pleasure... bold, rich, rosy, nude, or toasted reds... you name it, it's hot!
Red lipstick demands attention to detail. Take your time and do it right. Unless you have extremely naturally well-defined lips, use a lipliner in a similar shade. Remember, this season is about luxury and glamour. This is not the season to dash it on and go.
Silver is out, gold is in! It's that simple. And, because it's warm and soft, subtle gold can be worn by everyone. For evening, brush a soft gold powder over your face after you've applied your make-up. It gives a hint of warmth and elegance. Wear gold eyeshadow on your lid for a touch of understated glamour. While you're at it, brush a dab of gold lipshine in the center of your bottom lip to add depth and a luminous sheen.
Shine On
Yes, glow is still in but it's taken a different twist. We're not talking obvious. Instead the glow should look like it radiates from within. Have dry skin? Don't despair. Achieve a glow by applying a face gleamer over your foundation along the top of your cheekbone, chin, and between and above your eyebrows. If you've always wanted that dewy look but haven't known how to achieve it, new technology has created the look for you, and no one but you needs to know where it came from!
Don't stop there! This season shine is not relegated only to the cheeks and lips. The eyes have it as well. Use a liquid eye gloss to create instant shine...with a word of caution. Smooth, taut eyelids are a must. Anything less, and you'll look like you're trying too hard.
Under Cover
The best backdrop for red lips is smooth skin. Prepping your skin with a retexturing moisturizer creates the smoothness. Well-applied, but not heavy, coverage creates even skintone. You want your skin to glow (remember that's the basis of this season's look) but not compete with your lips and eyes. So, choose a foundation that meets your needs.
For blush, you have your choice of lightly contouring or sculpting your cheekbones by focusing the color back by your hairline and feathering it toward your nose or creating a flushed look by washing the color over your cheekbones and the apple of your cheek with no obvious start or end point. Cream blush is perfect for creating the flushed look.
Eye Time
It's time to retire your light, perky Spring eyeshadows. Deep, rich, contoured eyes are the focus this season. Eyeliner is back, creating gorgeous definition, and deep shadows contour the crease. For intense eyeliner that doesn't overpower, try lining the top lashes with black pencil and softening it with brown shadow using a smudge brush. Then line under your eye with just the shadow--no pencil. The look is soft, smoky and very flattering.
With such a dramatic change in focus for make-up this season, it can easily feel overwhelming. If that's your first reaction, let's look at a few must-haves for Fall. You can always add more later... or not. You choose.
a.. Red lipstick. How do you choose? Look, really look, at the natural pink/peach/russet color in your cheeks (good lighting is a must). Imagine it deepening to a rich shade and that's the color you want. If you have trouble seeing it, ask for help from a trusted (and knowledgeable) friend or a professional.
b.. Go for the Glow. If you don't have a natural shine, you can still look like you do. How? Try a cream or gel blush to give a glow to your cheeks or go wild with a face gleamer to add shine only where you want it. Remember, when applying blush, always begin back by your hairline and smooth in towards the apple of your cheek. I know this feels unnatural at first, but it creates an authentic flush to your cheeks and allows you more control in applying the color.
c.. Contour Your Eyes. If you've been wearing soft, summery shades, it's time for a change. Choose a warm, medium-dark, sheer color to define your crease (no dark harsh colors, and of course, everything needs to be well blended). If you have a deep color that goes on too strongly, try topping it with a medium earthy tone something in a tobacco, burgundy or warm plum shade to soften it.
d.. Invest in good brushes. Good technique is nice, but having the right tools makes the application easier, even effortless on occasion. What do you need? It depends on what you're doing. There are angled brushes, smudge brushes, fluff brushes, stiff brushes... Each serves a different purpose. Tell a professional the look you want to achieve, and s/he will tell you what you need. With proper care, good brushes will last years.
The key to good make-up is subtlety of application it's always easier to add more than to try to tone it down later. Take your time, and you'll achieve the look you want more easily and expertly. And, don't forget that make-up is supposed to be fun. If it's not, find someone with a magic touch. You'll be surprised what a difference that can make!
