Remembering Is Half the Battle
I've been seriously committed to my skin care routine since I was a teenager. No matter how exhausted or even ill I might feel, I never miss cleansing and caring for my face. I do my routine twice a day, in the morning and before going to bed. After 30 years of taking care of my skin, I can do it on autopilot! Perhaps I'm a little obsessive. Whatever. I have nice, healthy skin to show for it.
That's not true for many, many women. I hear clients bemoan the fact that, despite the best of intentions, they just can't seem to remember to do it on a regular basis. It's like anything else. You begin a new routine. You're excited and keep up with it for a while. Then life happens and good intentions aren't enough anymore. What gets in the way?
Priorities. We're pulled in a million different directions and are often forced to make decisions about what's the most important to us at any given moment. Late at night any extra effort can feel insurmountable when a warm, cozy bed is beckoning after a long day.
The thing about taking care of your skin is that if you want to keep your skin healthy and protected, it can't be an occasional thing. There's a certain amount of dedication involved. It doesn't have to take a lot of time. It's merely a matter of forming a habit that's so instilled in you that you can't imagine missing it. This takes practice and determination, but that's only half of it. The other half is about making it easy. If all of this sounds familiar to you, here are a few quick tips to help:
- Wash Your Face in Bed.
Yup, you heard right. Removing all the grime, pollution, bacteria, and makeup from the day is very important for your face. I doubt you really want to be grinding that into your face as you sleep but that's what a lot of people do out of pure exhaustion. While a basic skincare routine of cleansing, toning, and moisturizing would be great, even simply cleansing is a start! If all else fails, keep makeup cleansing wipes by your bed. As you lay your head on your pillow and you imagine all the dirt you're transferring to your lovely pillowcase, close your eyes, reach out your hand, and pull out a wipe. A few swipes and progress has been made!
- Lip Service.
A common complaint, especially this time of year, is dry, chapped lips. Although we'd like to think our lips can withstand the elements, the truth is they are susceptible to extreme dryness, cold air, and the sun. Keep something on your lips at all times. Find something you don't have to apply every five seconds but that has some staying power. And, don't forget about the time you're sleeping. Make it easy. Keep a hydrating lip conditioner handy right next to those makeup wipes. Apply before you go to sleep.
- Soft Hands.
Dry, chapped hands are another winter woe! Remembering to apply hand cream after every time you wash your hands or handle a lot of paper is not easy or perhaps even practical. And wearing gloves to bed is not everyone's idea of a good night's sleep! Here's an easy solution: keep your favorite hand cream (as rich as you'd like) near the front door. The next time you put on your winter gloves (you do wear them, don't you!), put a generous amount of hand cream on your hands first, and then put on your gloves. Your hands get a delicious treatment that will soften and protect them without hindering your ability to open the door or drive safely!
Incorporate these new healthy habits into your daily routine and by spring they'll be yours for life!
