Non-Invasive Skin Treatments, Part 3: Microdermabrasion
In our continuing discussion of non- or minimally invasive procedures for treating your skin, let's talk about microdermabrasion. Microdermabrasion is a superficial sanding of the skin. It works by blowing rough particles onto the skin and then vacuuming them up. It provides excellent exfoliation and the vacuum process can actually stimulate blood circulation and collagen production a great benefit!
As with most of these procedures, one treatment alone won't do it. It is generally performed in a series of approximately 6 treatments, one every 10-14 days.
What does it treat?
- Hyperpigmentation (dark spots/sun spots)
- Uneven skin tone
- Rough textured skin
- Brightens the skin by removing dull, dead skin cells
- Softens some acne scars (not ice-pick scarring)
- Reduces fine lines (especially around the eyes)
It works most effectively on the surface of the skin (although it does, as mentioned above improve blood circulation and promote collagen production). As a result, it's a fabulous adjunct to microcurrent or IPL (light therapy which we talked about last week) offering the best of both worlds.
The good news is that there's very little discomfort accompanying this procedure. It feels a little like lightly rubbing your skin with sandpaper. Your skin may have a slight pinkness to it immediately following your treatment but that fades pretty quickly which is why it's referred to as a "lunchtime" treatment.
The cost usually runs $75 to $200 per session, and you can sometimes receive a package price by purchasing a series up front. This is one of the most popular treatments because it gives good results with minimal discomfort and no downtime.
