Sleep it Off
In a perfect world we’d all get 8 hours of sleep every night and still get everything done during the day that we want to. But get real! When was the last time this was true for you?
While we can continue to wish for and work towards a perfect world, the reality is that it’s not. Studies show that the average woman gets 6 hours of sleep a night, not 8. So is there cause for concern? Sure, but beating ourselves up because we can’t relax enough is only going to exacerbate our stress and compound the problem. Just being aware so you can make good decisions and increase the amount you sleep whenever possible is what we’re shooting for.
Two things to consider:
- How long you sleep.
Getting enough sleep is the best beauty treatment available! While you’re sleeping your body is working to renew and rejuvenate itself from daily stress and work. It helps create luminous, refreshed looking skin. The most telltale signs of lack of sleep are dark circles and bags under your eyes. Although other factors can contribute to them, lack of sleep is among the most prevalent cause.
Lack of sleep also compromises your immune system which can affect your general health as well as the health of your skin. Whenever possible, forgo the evening news, your favorite TV show or let the laundry wait until the morning and go to bed a little earlier every minute counts. (Of course, it’s understood that skipping your nightly skincare routine is counterproductive and not one of the options, right!)
- The position you sleep in.
We’ve all had it happen. You wake up, take a shower, get your morning coffee, and finally take a quick look in the mirror. There they are! Sleep creases. It’s obvious to everyone that you slept most of the night on your left side. The best sleep position for your skin is on your back (so there’s no pressure on your face), but you either like to sleep that way or you don’t. If you do, choose it as often as possible. If not and you get the sleep marks on your face, a warm compress can help alleviate them more quickly.
It’s a fast-paced world we live in. Slowing down, taking care of ourselves is not always easy or encouraged as much as it should be.
It’s up to us to make healthy choices. Do the best you can.
