The Top Five Things No One Should Wear to the Office By Ginger Burr (Total Image Consultants)
Summer is a great time to people watch. It's a fascinating pastime.
Sometimes I wonder, however, judging by the fashions I see, if some
people have spent a little too much time in the sun! Oddly enough,
when the weather turns warm, normally sane people make odd clothing
choices. In the northeast, in particular, we spend so much time
bundled up against the cold and inclement weather that when the
temperature warms up we are inclined to throw caution to the wind. The
result can be unpredictable and even eyebrow-raising.
On that note, here is the Summer 2007 guide for the "Top 5 Things No
One Should Wear to the Office."
- Crocs: These shoes are adorable on 8 year-olds and equally sweet on 80
year-olds pushing a walker. Beyond that, unless you are a nurse's aide
in a nursing home or in an equivalent position where you spend all day
on your feet, resist the temptation to wear them any further from home
than your garden or the beach. There are so many beautiful and
comfortable summer shoes and sandals available that there's no reason
crocs need to darken an office doorway. These shoes have now usurped
the unenviable position (i.e., beachwear that is inappropriate for the
office) usually reserved for flip-flops (90% of which are too casual
to be worn professionally).
- Sandals with Socks: Sandals are meant to be worn with bare feet not
socks or stockings (no webbed toes, please). If your feet are cold
enough to need socks, wear closed-toe shoes.
- Tube Tops: This makes the list nearly every year. First of all, tube
tops are not flattering on everyone, and if you must wear one for
business (please reconsider), be sure to wear a jacket or sweater over
it at all times.
- Baby Dolls: The value of this style is questionable at best. It looks
adorable on teenagers and twenty-somethings. For everyone else it is a
matter of style, taste, and occasion. Be absolutely sure you are aware
of the statement you're making, e.g., baby dolls (the name alone is
telltale) tend to infantilize women. No matter what your age, body
type, or personal style, baby doll tops and dresses are never part of
a professional dress code.
- Anything You Have Doubts About: When spring is in the air, fashion
typically becomes more frilly, flowery, sheer, and juvenile. For
mature women (some of you might have noticed) this can be a
challenging season to shop. Trust your gut. If you ever wonder if
something is appropriate, chances are your instincts are telling you
to avoid it or at least get a second opinion. Trust your inner knowing!
When the weather turns warm and the days stay lighter longer, we feel
infused with a lightness, freshness and vitality, and we want to
reflect those feelings in our clothing choices. It's a perfect
opportunity to play with color, beautiful fabrics, and airy
accessories. It is also a time to reflect on who you are and how you
want to express yourself visually. We each make a statement without
saying a word simply by what we choose to wear. Be sure your statement is the one you intended.
