It’s that time again! Time to look at the new season’s trends by dividing them into categories: Bewitched, Bothered or Bewildered and determine which are worth exploring and which to leave far behind.
Whether it’s what’s happening with styles, prints or fabrics or color (note: I am beyond excited that after SO many years, dark brown is back and it’s everywhere. Finally!), it’s all here.
This surprised me! While I’ve been writing this newsletter for years, this is the first season that I don’t have a lot going into the Bothered and Bewildered sections. It’s probably short-lived and the fashion gurus will make up for it in the spring with even more bizarre designs, but for now, many of the styles out there are wearable. Of course, that doesn’t mean you’ll necessarily be delighted by every choice, but there are some fun options available.
As usual, I spent many hours creating a specially curated catalogue of styles and accessories I feel are worth exploring and I have a huge section of ‘Ginger’s Favorites’ which may or may not fall into the seasonal trends but might just be lovely all on their own. There is also a section of ‘Maybe Avoid These’ styles.
You can see the entire catalogue (over 160 suggested styles) HERE (https://hueandstripe.com/catalog/105H-SDhAFHrEb) (or click on any of the photos below to go to the catalogue which then has direct links to the websites so you can get more information).
Let’s get to it!
BEWITCHED
Colors
There are not a lot of surprises for the colors that are trending this fall. Like so many past years, aubergine, burnt orange, deep reds, mustard and plums are everywhere. But what is very different and very welcome, is ‘Brown is the New Black!’ It’s about time! We’ve been brown-starved for years now and finally we are seeing an outpouring of deep brown and other shades of brown. And, if you’re a confirmed black-lover, no worries…there is still plenty of black everywhere.
A few slight surprises are a grass green (although we still see forest green out there) cerulean blue and powder pink although I have to say that soft pink/blush has been showing up more and more in the fall/winter over the past few years so maybe it’s not that unusual.
Here’s a little enticement for those of you who are brown-addicts, too.
You can see a wide variety of colors and my recommended styles for the upcoming season here (or click on any photo in this article and it will take you to a catalogue of over 160 of my favorites): https://hueandstripe.com/catalog/105H-SDhAFHrEb
Denim
You might be thinking… “what’s so new about denim?” and you’d be right! Denim is a staple in almost everyone’s wardrobe. It’s the massive variety of denim that is exciting. Every leg width, length and shape, bedazzled and embroidered denim is hot and even animal print jeans are here. A dark, even wash is gaining popularity which is great and distressed denim is less prevalent so not every pair of jeans you look at has holes in it!
As an example, embroidered jeans can run the gamut from bright and upbeat to more subtle like the ones below:
Coats
Oh, my goodness! If you are in the market for a coat of any kind, this season is perfect. From raincoats to maxi coats (yes, longer coats are back) to animal print and wrap coats, you’ll see it all. And the color options are beautiful.
A fun wrap coat can be a perfect fall option and this one comes in 5 colors. Click on the photo to see even more beautiful coat options.
Faux Leather & Faux Fur
You can find faux leather and faux fur in a wide variety of styles – from classic to super fun and even outrageous and in a wide choice of colors.
Here’s just one example: This faux fur coat is unbelievably soft and cozy and has dark brown cuffs.
Prints: Plaid & Animal Print
Two expected prints for fall are back and bigger and better than ever. There are some gorgeous plaid colors in every imaginable type of garment and animal print runs from the ever-popular leopard to cow to zebra and a variety of color combinations. Here are two pretty choices and you can see many more in the special catalogue (click on the photo to see more):
Lace
We expect to see lace in the spring and summer, but it’s fun to see some popping up this fall. I love to find examples of lace garments that are not your typical lace (although classic lace styles are also good if you love them). Here’s a pretty lace blouse as one example.
Matching Sets
Matching sets have been growing in popularity and now it’s more than just ‘cozy’ sets, although those are still everywhere. Even suits (yes, matching blazer and pants or skirt) are called matching sets. Anything that has a top and bottom in the same color is up for grabs in this category. It’s great because it means it’s easier to find matching colors when you are looking for them. It just makes me laugh that they have to rename things to make them trendy! You can see a number of options in the section. Here’s one example:
Accessories
Accessories can be the heart of an outfit. This season there are some beauties from handbags in gorgeous colors to metal belts to tie shoes and SO much more. Here’s a peek at a few in the catalogue:

BOTHERED
Wide Cuffed Jeans
Cuffed jeans have been around forever, but now the cuff size has grown dramatically. I don’t see the appeal. The wide cuff looks unbalanced and draws the eye down. And, if you are petite or have short legs, it will make your legs look shorter. If that’s not what you want to have happen, then skip this style. I show an example of this in the ‘Maybe Avoid These’ section of the catalogue.
Low rise skirts
Maybe it’s just me, but even thinking of low rise anything makes me shudder. Even when low rise (a.k.a. hip huggers back in the day) was in when I was a teenager I didn’t wear them – they looked and felt horrible on me. Now we have low rise skirts. I supposed they are fun on an adorable 15- or 21-year-old, so I’ll leave it to them! Just know that many of the low rise skirts don’t have to be worn as low rise if you see something you like but don’t want it hanging low on your hips.
BEWILDERED
Slip Dresses Over Pants
Really? I know the dress over pants trend has been around for a bit (although I have yet to meet anyone who wears it), the latest trend is a slip dress (body-hugging and lightweight) over…wait for it…wide leg pants (fuller volume and often weightier). You had better be super cool to pull that discombobulated style off without looking like a total mess. More power to you if you can!
There you go! Some lovely options for the fall and you might already have some of it in your closet. That said, at least around here in New England, the winters are long and it’s nice to add a couple of new things to spice things up and keep from feeling bored with your entire wardrobe by mid-January.
Have fun exploring it all and I’d love to hear your favorites!
